After having worked in the government contracting field for awhile, I found that there were so many wonderful sources of free data that could be used for researching any government contractor who had worked with the U.S. government. Tools like FPDS.gov and CCR.gov are invaluable for competitive intelligence research.
But there’s a huge problem: these systems are incredibly difficult to use. When I say “incredibly difficult”, I mean you’d better go brush up on your SQL, advanced Excel skillz, and a dictionary worth of definitions like “action obligation amount” and “DUNS”. Frankly, it takes an expert to navigate the systems, and that’s what I had to become.
I began to develop my own databases that I used to save competitive intelligence on any government contractor I had researched, but quickly found that if I could put it all together into a single system, I would have a powerful tool for research.
My brother happens to be a brilliant developer, so we sat down and discussed how we could tie the various databases into a single, user-friendly system. More than a year later he had built out a rubust toolset that allows for easy discovery of government contractors in seconds.
Check out the GovBizIntel.com website for more details. It’s amazing what kind of information you can unearth on a government contractor.
