SEO Crosslinking Basics

It is easy to neglect crosslinking as an SEO tool, but connecting your site to other communities on the web is a vital component of marketing your site. SEO writers distinguish between two types of crosslinking: offsite and onsite. While it may be obvious as to which is what and why, let’s look at ways both crosslinking methods can be used.

Offsite Crosslinking

Just like it sounds, offsite crosslinking is when you have a link pointing back to your site on someone else’s website. This can be accomplished in two main ways: comments on blogs and affiliate programs. Blogs are ideal because the links are connected to blogs about relevant topics. Affiliate programs are also effective, but require contracts and you cannot always control how your link is used or where it is posted.

Onsite Crosslinking

When you link to other pages on your site or to your home page, you are using onsite crosslinking. Creating a web of interlinking pages is important for showing search engines – and customers – the importance of content on your website. Onsite crosslinking should be used to help your customers find information quickly and efficiently. I never add extra links that do not help readers or clutter the page.

Wrapping it up

Crosslinking is a powerful and important tool for SEO. Use offsite and onsite crosslinking to build search engine rank and to help you customers find relevant information.
