When I got the opportunity to review Jim Kimmon’s eBook I jumped at the opportunity for a simple reason: his book is why I am able to work from home today. Hands down, it changed my life. No other book or resource gave me the tools I needed and connected the dots like Jim’s book. For anyone looking for a work from home, getting started guide, you will have a hard time finding a better resource.
So my biggest challenge in writing this review is being objective! I was able to bill $12k in 3 months after reading this book, and I still open the book on a regular basis to reference important resources and information. So, read this with a grain of salt.
I chose the Top 5 things that make a resource important to me and my readers: Readability, Usability, Value, Quantity, and Prettiness. I know prettiness may not be that big of a deal, and it isn’t. But I want to be thorough for Jim’s sake.
Jim starts the book off with a table of contents and an introduction to help readers find important information quickly. The book is carefully laid out with clear headings. Jim’s style is also clear and simple to read, making digesting the wall of information easy even for folks new to the industry.
This is important because no resource is useful if you can’t understand it. The only reason this isn’t a 5 out of 5 is because the content is so dense. A few more stories would help break up the material.
For me, usability with a resource like Jim’s ebook means that it provides information that I can access quickly. The book is chock full of internet-based resources that you can begin using immediately.
One example that I use daily is Jott.com. It’s basically a super service that lets you use your phone, instant messenger, email, text message, almost anything, to make “Jotts.” Jim suggested using Jott as an accounting tool, and that’s what I needed to start documenting records quickly and easily.
Well, as I stated earlier, I use and re-use this book all the time. Besides that, about a week after I got the book I landed my biggest client because of Jim’s input on how to set up a bid. No other piece of information I have found has been so valuable. When I can say that I would probably be stuck at an office if I hadn’t found Jim’s book, then it must be pretty important.
Jim’s book is packed with tons of tools, and that’s what quantity is all about. Jim aims to teach a workable system for making money from home, and that’s what he accomplishes. Instead of giving you lots of extra information, he focuses.
If you want a book that offers pages and pages of links, this is not the book for you. I do use other resources when I need special tools, and that’s the only reason this book does not get 5 out of 5 stars.
Well, here’s where the book loses a little bit of its gloss for me. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not ugly, but it’s not pretty. I’ve got a background in visual design, so I’m a bit sensitive.
If I had a recommendation on the prettiness factor it would be to let a designer go over the book really quickly to improve some of the images and design elements.
For anyone who wants to work from home and needs a foundational resource for getting started, Jim’s ebook is hands down an unbeatable way to go.
It changed my life and I’m sure it will yours too. Let me know what you think!
